I think teaching is about the development of personal power in the individual.  That includes learning maths and other things but it basically means freeing students wherever you can from the sometimes foolish regulations that bind them.
Do not accept the way you are treated by a bully or bullies; you can do something proactive to stop it. You do not deserve it and bullies have to be called to account for their behaviour.
